Prior to April 2014, there had been two Poets Laureate of Jamaica selected by the Poetry League of Jamaica.

Tom Redcam (Thomas MacDermot) received the honour posthumously in October 1933 at a function held at the Ward Theatre and presided over by the Mayor of Kingston.
