The Emergence of Library Systems in Jamaica
After the discovery of Jamaica in 1494, the population consisted of a minority of landowners and planters, educated overseas and mostly slave workers whose owners found education for slaves unnecessary. (Robinson, 1973). It was against this sentiment the island was plagued with illiteracy and only the wealthy had access to both information and education through personalized libraries. From this backdrop libraries such as “The Legislative Council and House of Assembly which were established before 1806 for the use of the Governors of the Island and person connected with the Legislature” (Robinson, 1973).
