1907 Earthquake

On Monday, January 14, 1907, at approximately 3:30pm, the island of Jamaica was affected by a magnitude 6.5 earthquake, which resulted in damages to some towns on the North Coast of the Island and included the towns of Port Maria, Buff Bay and Annotto Bay. Kingston, however, was the parish that was more severely impacted by this natural disaster.

In Kingston, the earthquake resulted in severe infrastructural damages to roadways, pipelines, railways, electrical poles, homes, churches, business places and schools. The busy commercial district of Kingston came to a virtual stand still after the earthquake rocked the city, resulting in over a thousand deaths and millions of dollars in damages.
