Presenting Lorna Goodison, Poet Laureate of Jamaica
On Wednesday, May 17, 2017, Lorna Goodison CD was officially invested as the Poet Laureate of Jamaica 2017-2020.
Despite the heavy rains the day before, the glittering Ballroom at King’s House was filled with dignitaries, well wishers, and lovers of poetry alike who gathered to witness this important moment in Jamaica’s cultural history.
Today, we’re sharing some highlights from the Ceremony.
With pride and joyful expectation, we welcome our new Poet Laureate, Lorna Gaye Goodison. Poetry will prosper.
Goodison is a past student of St. Hugh’s High School for Girls. There were several St. Hugh’s ‘old girls’ in attendance who burst into a rousing rendition of the school song as Goodison was presented with a bouquet of roses by St. Hugh’s sixth form student, Brianna Miller.
